The Basketball Diaries By Jim Carroll is a autobiography about the life of author and musician Jim Carroll.
Its a gritty coming of age story about a teenage boy growing up in New York City addicted to heroine.
Made into a movie in 1995 by director Scott Kalvert ,we follow the life of Jim a star basketball player whose life suddenly takes a turn for the worse when his best friend is diagnosed with Leukemia, causing a domino effect that leads him into the seedy world of heroine addiction.
The Basketball Diaries is not a happy go lucky story with a perfect ending. If you cannot handle real life portrayed in a very honest way then you will not be able to get into the movie or the book.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. This movie was based on a true story, but it was directed like a fantasy movie, at least that is the impression it left me with.
I wanted more from this film. It didn't seem at all real. But I did like the acting and star studded cast.
